We were told to prepare to put our dog down — but he didn’t even have cancer.
We took our 7‑year‑old dog Mayhem to Alexander Street Vet (Melton) because his leg was swollen. After x‑rays, the vet told us it was likely an aggressive bone tumour. We were given two options: take him to a specialist for possible amputation or prepare for euthanasia soon. We were told to “go home, cuddle him, and bring him back to say goodbye.”
That night, my partner and I were devastated. We were already looking into cremation services and urns, believing we were about to lose our dog.
Even worse, our **young son** was so upset by the news that he couldn’t focus in school the next day. His teacher contacted us because he was struggling emotionally — that’s how much this affected our family.
Thankfully, we contacted our regular vet the next morning. She reviewed everything but insisted on performing her own tests. After examining Mayhem, she determined the swelling was from an **old injury causing benign bone growth**, **not cancer**. Mayhem is healthy and very much with us.
Had we trusted the diagnosis without seeking a second opinion, we could have euthanized our dog for no reason. This caused severe emotional distress to our entire family — especially our child.
I strongly advise any pet owner visiting this clinic to get a second opinion before making major decisions. I cannot recommend this clinic. Really no consideration for the customer or the beautiful dog
I recently had my dog euthanised at this vet clinic, it was also the first clinic I took my dog to. They have always been kind, caring and understanding. Not only did they show compassion during a really hard time but they offered an incredible amount of care for not only my dog but myself as well.
I was offered a small clipping of fur, a nose and paw print of my dog and today I received a card of condolences from the clinic for my Daisy.
Thank you for making this difficult time easier and showing your clients and their pets incredible compassion and care.
I attended this vet today 14/6/25 after my dog was attacked by another dog through a broken fence on a walk. My dog had nasty cuts on his nose and was bleeding. As I walked in I was greeted with contempt and felt treated like an inconvenience. The lady at the reception was rude and said they were fully booked.
When the incident occurred I had been in contact with the police and melton council to disclose the incident and rectify the issues with the broken fence and hold the other dog owner accountable.
The receptionist walked back into the waiting room after getting a vet to see my dog, the vet was lovely and treated myself and my dog with respect and kindness and dignity.
The vet took my dog out the back to treat his wounds, in which at the point I had received a call from the melton ranger to confirm the location of the incident and my dogs well being and safety.
The receptionist then rudely said to me “you need to get off the phone” and something on the line of finding my dogs account to bill to… I responded to the receptionist that I’m on the phone with the council about the attack. She was not interested in me having steps to take regarding the incident but just more concerned about the account and billing! Like I was gonna do a runner and not pay or something! The care of my dog was priority and not the account!
Like I said the vet was lovely but the receptionist who was on on this day needs an attitude repair and understand peoples emotions and the things that come with a dog attack!
And having a child behind the counter is also very unprofessional!
I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to Jess for the exceptional care you provided to our beloved dog during their final hours. Your compassion, professionalism, and attention to detail were evident in every aspect of the care you gave, not just to our dog, but to us as owners as well.
In such a difficult and emotional time, your kindness and understanding meant the world to us. You ensured our dog was comfortable, peaceful, and surrounded by love. You gave us the space to say goodbye and offered support when we needed it most. The way you balanced your expertise with such warmth and empathy was truly remarkable.
It’s never easy to say goodbye to a member of the family, but your gentle approach made a heartbreaking moment a little easier to bear. Thank you for treating our dog with the utmost respect and for caring for us through the entire process. You’ll always have a special place in our hearts.
With sincere appreciation,
Bensons family - Corey and Kim!
